SPEECH: Badcoe community reaction to South Road artist images

Mr Speaker, imagine waking up on a sunny Sunday morning .. collecting your paper from your driveway .. unfurling it over a hot coffee .. to see images of your own neighbourhood – looking nothing like your own neighbourhood.

You splutter your coffee as you realise that outside your home you’ll soon have not just the 50 metre wide sunken roadway you were expecting to be built in place of the existing South Road … but additional at-grade roads .. three tunnel exits .. and most surprisingly an elevated flyover road – right in front of your home. All spanning some 120 metres wide.

OPINION: Heartbreak and Highways

Picture this.

You come home from a busy day at work. Much like any other weekday afternoon.

You step over your doormat emblazoned with 'Welcome'. Home to your safe haven. You hug your kids, kiss your partner, pat the dog. Maybe you'll unwind with a cool drink on the back porch before starting to cook dinner. Maybe you'll go for a walk, and chat with your friendly neighbours along the way.

WATCH THE VIDEO: South Road / Cross Road Confusion

Badcoe residents have been told for nine months that the Cross Road intersection (Emerson Crossing) won't be touched as part of the North-South Corridor work.

We've been flatly told by DIT that Cross Road will NOT connect into the southern tunnel at all.

In Parliament on the 3rd August, the Minister suggested the OPPOSITE - indicating Cross Road IS part of the project!
