‘The Galloping Major’
The seat of Badcoe is named in honour of Major Peter John Badcoe VC. Major Badcoe posthumously received Australia’s highest military honour the Victoria Cross for three acts of gallantry in the Vietnam War.
Major Badcoe was known as ‘the Galloping Major’ by his troops because he was ‘always on the go’.
Major Badcoe was born in Malvern. He joined Officer Cadet School in 1952 and first saw active service in Vietnam in August 1966. Between February and April 1967 he repeatedly performed extraordinary feats inspiring the troops he led. He was killed by a burst of enemy fire when he rose to throw a grenade. Major Badcoe is buried at Terendak Cemetery in Malaysia.
In May 2008, the former Labor Government joined with Seven News Chairman Kerry Stokes to purchase the Badcoe medals for $488 000. The collection is now held by the SA Museum.
Port Adelaide Football Club presents the Badcoe Medal as part of the ANZAC Round of the AFL Premiership season.
