MEDIA RELEASE: Labor will restore the axed City High School Zone

A Malinauskas Labor government will restore the city high school zone – reversing the Liberals cruel cut.

The decision means families in Marleston, Kurralta Park, Glandore, Black Forest, Clarence Park, Mile End, Hilton, Torrensville and Richmond will again have the choice to enrol their children in their nearest school.

Labor will invest $98 million to expand Adelaide Botanic High School and increase student capacity by 700.

In February 2019, the Marshall Liberal government issued a press release announcing nine suburbs would be axed from the shared city school zone, without any warning or consultation. Shrinking the school zone was not disclosed by the Liberals as a consequence of its decision to move Year 7s into high school.

The Adelaide Botanic High expansion is due for completion in 2024. Labor will work to accommodate students from the exiled suburbs to city schools as soon as practicable.

Labor will consult with parents about transitionary arrangements to ensure any adverse results from the Liberals decision are addressed.

Labor will be making further announcements about investments in other public schools as the state election approaches.

It’s been a long, hard fight for fairness for the families of the inner south and western suburbs – but I’ve listened – and delivered.

We’re doing this because it’s the right thing to do. It’s not right for governments to say one thing – then do another.

Parents placed their faith in both parties to deliver the long-promised school zone – but one party broke that promise once it won government.

I’ve led the fight for a fair deal for local families and I’m overjoyed that we can now deliver a result, if Labor is elected in March.

I’m proud to be part of a team that prioritises education – and a fair go.

The Liberals sudden decision to axe the city high school zone – without any warning – was unfair and came as a huge shock to families in Badcoe.

I applaud the parents who stood up against this injustice and rallied for this change. I look forward to delivering on this promise, if Labor is elected.

My vision is for our community to have excellent quality education at all public schools and I look forward to making further announcements in coming weeks.
