A key Malinauskas Labor Government commitment, the multi-million-dollar expansion of Adelaide Botanic High School, is underway with the turning of the first sod.

The project has the green light following planning approval by the State Commission Assessment Panel and the Department for Education receiving the construction licence from Adelaide City Council.

This means construction of the $98 million expansion of the inner-city high school can now officially begin.

Lendlease Building Contractors Pty Ltd was awarded the building contract after successfully delivering the initial build of Adelaide Botanic High School in 2019.

This will be completed alongside award-winning architects Cox Architecture who last month revealed the final design concepts for the 1800sqm seven-storey vertical extension to be built on the southern side of the school.

The expansion will feature a rooftop sports area, research and study areas, an entrepreneurial hub, and a performing arts facility, and will cater for a further 700 students.

The project, which includes a transfer of land to the Council, will be finished by 2024.

The Malinauskas Labor Government also recently returned suburbs to the shared CBD high school zone, that were cut by the previous Liberal Government in 2019.

Families in Hilton, Kurralta Park, Glandore and Black Forest and parts of Torrensville, Mile End, Richmond and Clarence Park will again be able to enrol their students at Adelaide Botanic High School.

It’s really important that our children and young people have access and choice when it comes to education.

The expansion of Adelaide Botanic High School will allow more students to access the incredible facilities and programs available at Adelaide and Adelaide Botanic High Schools.

We feel incredibly proud to further develop this project and expand on our original work at this site.

Expanding on what are already fantastic facilities, the addition of this new building will further enhance not only street presence but the learning environments and overall experience for students for years to come.

I'm proud to have been educated in the public school system and, as a former education journalist, understand how important it is to provide students with the best learning environments to help them reach their full potential.

Adelaide Botanic High is a state-of-the-art educational facility and more capacity means more families in my community can access a quality public education for their kids.

I am so proud of the tenacious families who fought for the CBD zones to be reinstated – with the result of their hard work enabling us to now expand Adelaide Botanic High School.

It’s so important that we don’t waste any more time and I’m thrilled we are taking this first step so now building can commence.
